Prediabetes is a global health concern, warranting effective management strategies to prevent the progression to type 2 diabetes and associated complications. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) guidelines for prediabetes were adopted worldwide; however, implementing these guidelines and their outcomes vary based on regions and ethnic backgrounds. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the characteristics and treatment outcomes of prediabetic patients in Vinmec Times City Hospital and related factors.
Methods
This retrospective observational study conducted at Vinmec Times City Hospital in Ha Noi, Vietnam, from June 2020 to June 2022, aimed to characterize prediabetic patients and assess the effectiveness of their management. By reviewing medical records, we described patient characteristics and measured treatment outcomes before and after a one-year follow-up period. Additionally, we compared progression rates between groups to identify potential prognostic factors.
Results
Most patients were middle-aged, with an average age of 53 years. The mean BMI was 24.4 kg/m². The prevalence of dyslipidemia was significantly high in our population (92.7%). Common comorbidities include hypertension at 18%, erectile dysfunction at 9.8% in males, and microalbuminuria at 2.2%. Treatment outcomes showed that 10.5% of the overweight and obese patients achieved 5% weight loss. The progression rate from prediabetes to diabetes was 7.6% in one year. Additionally, 20% of patients achieved the LDL-C goal. Our study identified baseline HbA1c as the main predictor for disease progression.
Conclusion
In conclusion, our study highlights a population with a significant high rate of dyslipidemia and a 7.6% progression rate from prediabetes to diabetes within one year. Weight loss is challenging, with 10.5% of obese and overweight patients achieving 5% weight loss. The baseline HbA1c level is the key factor for the prognosis of disease progression. These findings underscore the pressing need for more effective interventions to increase compliance, prevent diabetes onset, and promote weight management in prediabetic patients at Vinmec Times City International Hospital, Vietnam. | en_US |
