Prof. Nguyen Thanh Liem is a pioneer and innovator in pediatrics endoscopic surgery and stem cell transplantation . He graduated from Hanoi Medical University in 1976 and completed medical residency program in Surgery at Viet Duc Hospital in 1979. He defended his PhD. thesis in 1991 and was appointed as a Medical Professor in Surgery in 2009. He is internationally recognized inventor by his seven advanced operative techniques in the Pediatrics Surgery. Regarding the stem cell studies, Prof. Liem is a pioneer of using stem cell therapy for unmet diseases in children such as cerebral palsy due to oxygen deprivation, due to neonatal icterus, due to intracranial hemorrhage, neurological sequelae after nearly death drwoning, Autism, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, and liver cirrhosis due to biliary atresia. Throughout his career, he has been in charge of a number of important positions such as Director of Vietnam National Children Hospital from 2002 to 2012; Director of Vinmec International Hospital from 2013-2016; Vice president of Asian Association of Pediatric Surgery; President of Vietnam Association of Pediatric Surgery. Currently, Prof. Liem is the director of Vinmec Research Institute of Stem Cell and Gene Technology.

“Adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cell therapy for the management of female sexual dysfunction: Literature reviews and study design of a clinical trial”
(2022-09-28)Hormone imbalance and female sexual dysfunction immensely affect perimenopausal female health and quality of life. Hormone therapy can improve female hormone deficiency, but long-term use increases the risk of cardiovascular ... -
Human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells for severe neurological sequelae due to anti-N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor encephalitis: First case report
(2022-06-15)Anti-N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor encephalitis is caused by altered patient immune reactions. This study reports the first patient with severe neurologic sequelae after NMDA receptor encephalitis treated with ... -
Cytokine-primed umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells enhanced therapeutic effects of extracellular vesicles on osteoarthritic chondrocytes
(2022-10-27)In recent years, extracellular vesicles (EVs) secreted by mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have emerged as a potential cell-free therapy against osteoarthritis (OA). Thus, we investigated the therapeutic effects of EVs released ... -
Optimization of human umbilical cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cell isolation and culture methods in serum- and xeno-free conditions
(2022-12)Background: Although umbilical cord blood (UCB) is identified as a source of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) with various advantages, the success in cell isolation is volatile. Therefore, it is necessary to optimize methods ... -
Autologous bone marrow mononuclear cell infusion for liver cirrhosis after the Kasai operation in children with biliary atresia
(2022-12)Aim: To evaluate the safety and early outcomes of autologous bone marrow mononuclear cell (BMMNC) infusion for liver cirrhosis due to biliary atresia (BA) after Kasai operation. Methods: An open-label clinical trial was ... -
The correlation between peripheral blood index and immune cell expansion in Vietnamese elderly lung cancer patients
(2023-02-21)(1) Background: The dysfunction and reduced proliferation of peripheral CD8+ T cells and natural killer (NK) cells have been observed in both aging and cancer patients, thereby challenging the adoption of immune cell therapy ... -
The density of bone marrow mononuclear cells and CD34+ cells in patients with three neurologic conditions
(2023)Background This study aimed to identify the density of mononuclear cells (MNCs) and CD34+ cells in the bone mar‑row of patients with three neurologic conditions. Methods The study included 88 patients with three neurologic ... -
Outcomes of autologous bone marrow mononuclear cell administration in the treatment of neurologic sequelae in children with spina bifida
(2023)Background To evaluate the safety and efcacy of autologous bone marrow mononuclear cell (BMMNC) infusion in the management of neurological sequelae in children with spina bifda (SB). Methods BMMNCs were harvested from ... -
